The producers of this proposal hope that the staging of a production of Peter Pan in the natural
amphitheatre at Mountbellew Park, Co Galway, the former site of Bellew house in July 2011, would be of a great benefit to
the communities of Mountbellew, Menlough, Moylough and east Galway as a whole. With a cast of over 40 ranging in ages from
6 to 60 our plan is to involve the local amateur drama societies, schools and youth groups. As well as the cast the production
would require the help with the set construction, stage management and stewarding. The producers see performances over three
nights; say Friday, Saturday and Sunday with nightly audiences of approx 600. The set would be laid out in three sections,
to the left as you look down the slope would be the house set ideally on a flat truck trailer, then in the middle would be
Neverland, the main acting area and to right would be the pirate ship. The plan is to bring in the surrounding woods by up-lighting
the nearby trees. Seating would be provided on the grass slope and raked seating on the flat area above with lighting towers
either side. Access for the audience would be through the main gate with parking available just off the main road in the GAA
grounds car park. The other entrances would be stewarded with a second ticketed access at the church end. There would be a
number of porta-loos situated at the rear of the seating area with a small refreshment area to one side. There would also
be caravans at the control points at the main entrances.
The hope is to finance this project through the help of Galway County Council, the Arts Council,
and sponsorship from national and local business under a Gold, Silver and Bronze system. Although the gate receipts would
only cover a small amount of costs they could go towards promoting events in the following years. Another way to raise funds
would be through the sale of a limited amount of merchandise, sweatshirts, baseball caps badges etc. The other major hurdle
is the permission from Collite, as they own the woods. It is hoped that with the backing of both councils and the Gardai and
Fire department that Collite would allow this wonderful community event to happen. As this is a non-profit project it would
have to be managed by a board made up of local business and artistic people.
A royalty fee to perform Peter Pan would also be paid, which is shared with children's hospitals
in the country, this is a standard fee paid by all productions of Peter Pan as bequeathed by the author J.M Barrie.
Promotion of this project is important and along with the usual posters and fliers it is vital
to use all forms of media from a website to TG4 and RTE, it maybe possible to get Galway Bay FM involved by asking them to
help with finding the actor to play the all important Peter!
